There were at least 281 deaths and 373 injuries resulting from the 200 events as reported by Wikipedia. From Alaska to Hawaii, they've taken places in 27 States. And the list probably overlooks many minor incidents. For example, those where guns were fired by accident. In this Silk, we imported data on the 1990 - 2015 major US school shootings. You can use this resource to discover patterns, plot variables and compare companies.

Mapping the Victims of US School Shootings

There have already been at least eleven school shootings in the US in 2015. More than those reported on Wikipedia for 2011, and just one less than the amount reported for the whole year 2012.

The data shows a steep escalation in the number of school shootings in the last years. In 2014 there have been at least 40 major accidents, against "only" 8 reported in 2011. That's actually a 400% increase in just 3 years. Although this could be explained by many factors. The list of school shootings derives from media reporting on the topic, and the December 2012 Sandy Hook shootings might have significantly impacted the number of news articles on this topic.

The average number of victims per shooting each year seems to confirm this theory as to way the number of reported is growing so quickly. True, there were 40 episodes reported in 2014, but the average death toll was 0.7 deaths per event. For the '90s, there are about 4 - 7 events listed per year, but their death toll is higher.

If we look at Wikipedia's list, Detroit, Los Angeles and Memphis are the cities that have recorded the highest number of events. In these cities there have been at least 4 school shootings since 1990. That's an average of one every 5 years.

California, Connecticut and Colorado are the states where most of the deaths occurred. California is less of surprise, being the most populated US State. But Connecticut has 1/10 of California's 39 million inhabitants.

The high rates of Connecticut and Colorado aren't explained by the number of shootings, though. They experienced respectively 5 and 2 reported shootings. Less than many other States. But the tragic impact of the Newton and Columbine shootings clearly stands out

Newton and Columbine weren't the deathliest school shootings though. Virginia Tech's massacre resulted in 33 deaths and 25 injuries: "deadliest attack by a lone gunman in US history".
